Inclement Weather Policy

This document is intended to guide the pastoral staff in decisions regarding cancellation or postponement of church activities due to inclement weather.

Monday – Friday

In the event of any weather related closure or early dismissal of the Howard County School System, implementation of the Snow Emergency Plan in Howard County, or a Hurricane warning (* see footnote) is in effect in the area including our church, activities at Friendship Baptist Church will be affected as follows:

  • Weddings and funerals shall fall under the discretion of the presiding member of the pastoral staff.

  • All other events, such as (but not limited to) worship services, meetings, ministry activities, banquets, parties, celebrations, etc., shall not be held. They will be rescheduled at the discretion of the pastor or ministry leader in charge of the activity.

  • There is an exception to this policy that may be invoked at the discretion of the pastoral staff. It is possible that later in a day on which this weather policy requires the closure of the church, the weather has improved and the roads are passable. On a case-by-case basis the pastoral staff may allow evening activities to take place. Their decision will be guided by their concern for the safety of the church family. For the purpose of this decision, pastoral staff is meant as those individuals recognized by the church as pastors (not necessarily ordained) and readily available to participate in such a decision.

Weekends/Other

Recognizing that there are times when guidance by school closures is not possible, such as on weekends, activities at Friendship Baptist Church will be affected as follows:

  • Weddings and funerals shall fall under the discretion of the presiding member of the pastoral staff.

  • If a Snow Emergency Plan in Howard County or a Hurricane warning (* see footnote) is in effect in the area including our church, all other events, such as (but not limited to) worship services, meetings, ministry activities, banquets, parties, celebrations, etc., shall not be held. They will be rescheduled at the discretion of the pastor or ministry leader in charge of the activity.

  • If a Snow Emergency Plan in Howard County or a Hurricane warning in the vicinity of our church is not in effect, the pastoral staff will use their best, prayerful judgment in deciding church activity cancellations, guided by their concern for the safety of the church family.

Notification

In the event of a church closing, the following notifications should occur:

  • The main telephone greeting should be changed to announce the closure.

  • When possible, the main web site (www.fbcmd.org) will be updated to announce the closure.

  • When possible, a sign should be placed on the doors of the main entrance about the closure.

  • If the closure affects only a small number of people, the ministry leader should attempt to personally contact those involved (phone, text, etc.).

Personal Responsibility

In any inclement weather, participants in church activities should use good judgment when deciding on the participation of the individual and their family. While the church may be open, distance and local conditions may cause someone to make a prudent decision to stay home.
